Anh-Thuy Nguyen (b. 1983, Nha Trang City, Vietnam) is an interdisciplinary artist, whose work includes photography, video, installation, and performance art. Using her personal history as an immigrant, Nguyen‘s work delves into conflicting emotions, feelings, and thoughts often portrayed through odd, yet hauntingly beautiful visuals of gain and loss. She splits her time between Tucson, USA, and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Boat Journey is an ongoing photographic project that seeks a place where immigrants belong. A figure dressed in a traditional Vietnamese tunic and pants, áo dài, holds onto a small makeshift leather boat. This boat is the ticket, the passport to the escape. However, it gets stuck on the land, and can never be set free.

“The journey I have experienced as a female, an immigrant, and an outsider provides me with rich experiences to define who I am. My personal work highlights complex relationships and cultural clashes resulting from my existence between cultural identities: Vietnamese and American.”
